    About us

From its humble beginnings in the 1960s, when a group of like-minded aviation enthusiasts set out with a desire to own a Spitfire, over the years the Newark Air Museum has evolved into one of the UK’s leading volunteer managed aviation museums. It officially opened to the public in 1973 and has been located on its current site since 1978.

Open to the public for more than fifty years; the museum is a registered charity; an Accredited Museum and a VAQAS accredited site.

The museum site is located just to the north of Newark-on-Trent, on what is part of the former World War II airfield of RAF Winthorpe, which is in eastern Nottinghamshire.

Newark Air Museum’s diverse collection of more than ninety five aircraft and cockpit sections covers the history of aviation.

There are extensive under cover displays including two aircraft display halls that house more than fifty six aircraft and helicopters.

In addition to its collection of aircraft the museum displays a diverse selection of aviation artefacts; a collection of more than forty aero engines; and has an extensive archive of aviation publications, photographs and documents.

On site there is a Café that was built, thanks to the museum’s own fund raising efforts; plus, an extensive shop, which was once described as “An Aviation Enthusiasts Dream!”
